What is composite bonding?

Composite bonding can improve the colour, shape and appearance of your teeth.

Composite bonding is a cosmetic dental treatment that uses a tooth-coloured resin to reshape or repair a tooth. The material is carefully applied, sculpted and polished to create a natural-looking result that complements your smile.

How are teeth prepared for composite bonding?

Composite bonding usually requires little or no removal of the natural tooth surface. Before treatment, your dentist will examine your teeth and gums to make sure bonding is a suitable option for you.

A shade of composite resin will be selected to blend naturally with your surrounding teeth. The tooth surface is then cleaned and gently prepared before a bonding agent is applied to help the composite adhere securely.

The resin is added in layers and carefully sculpted into the desired shape. Each layer is hardened using a special curing light before the tooth is refined and polished to achieve a smooth, natural-looking finish.

Will I need a temporary restoration between visits?

Composite bonding can usually be completed in a single appointment, so a temporary restoration is not normally required. The length of your visit will depend on the number of teeth being treated and the changes you would like to make.

What happens after composite bonding?

Once the composite has been shaped and polished, your dentist will check that your bite feels comfortable. Small adjustments can usually be made immediately or at a follow-up appointment if needed.

You can return to most normal activities straight away. Good oral hygiene, regular dental examinations and avoiding habits such as biting nails, chewing pens or opening packaging with your teeth will help protect your bonding. Composite may stain, wear or chip over time, but it can often be polished, repaired or replaced.

Porcelain veneers may be suitable when a longer-lasting or more stain-resistant cosmetic treatment is desired. Unlike composite bonding, veneers are made outside the mouth and usually require some preparation of the natural tooth.

Teeth whitening can improve the colour of natural teeth but will not change their shape or position. If whitening and bonding are both planned, your dentist will normally discuss the best order for treatment because composite resin does not whiten in the same way as natural enamel.

Orthodontic treatment may be recommended for larger gaps or more significant changes to tooth position. Crowns may be more appropriate for teeth that are heavily filled, weakened or extensively damaged.

Why choose composite bonding?

  • tick

    A natural-looking improvement

Composite resin is available in a range of shades and can be carefully matched to your natural teeth. It may be used to disguise small chips, uneven edges, minor discolouration and other imperfections.

  • tick

    A minimally invasive treatment

Composite bonding usually requires little or no removal of healthy enamel. The material is applied directly to the tooth, helping to preserve as much of your natural tooth structure as possible.

  • tick

    Versatile and convenient

Bonding can reshape worn or uneven teeth, close small gaps and create a more balanced smile. Treatment can often be completed in one visit, and the composite can usually be adjusted or repaired if necessary.
