When you attend our practice with pain a dentist will typically ask you questions like this
- How long have you had your toothache?
- Is your toothache triggered by eating and drinking or does it come on spontaneously?
- Does it keep you awake at night?
- Does it wake you up at night?
- Is it relieved by analgesics/pain killers?
- How long does the pain last?
- Does anything relieve the pain?
- Can you identify which tooth is causing the pain or is it only generalised pain?.
Your answers to these questions, along with examination of your mouth and the taking of x-rays (if needed) will help your dentist achieve a diagnosis and then establish an appropriate plan for your treatment. This may involve the placement or replacement of a filling, placing varnish on exposed root surfaces or build up of warn teeth. More advanced problems that can’t be reversed would then likely require root canal treatment or extraction.
